The Fly and the Sparrow

A fly landed on a large stone. She closed her eyes and exposed her body to the beneficial rays of the sun. She contentedly enjoyed the pleasant moments of the present.
„A nice day, isn’t it?“ a strange voice sounded.
When the fly opened her eyes, she nearly had a heart attack. Next to her sat a sparrow. She truly hadn’t expected such a surprise.
     „Re-al-ly ni-ce,” she stammered.
„A wonderful day for me, a bad day for you,” said the feathered one confidently.
The fly knew exactly what he meant.
Her companion said, „At this time, my children need food. A lot of food, so they can grow quickly.”
The unfortunate fly sensed that this was her last hour. She had almost accepted her fate. Suddenly, she had an idea.
„If you eat me, your children will lose their father.”
The sparrow didn’t understand the meaning of those words.
     „What do you mean?”
„Before I flew here, I saw a farmer with a gun. He hid among the bushes at the edge of the ripe wheat field and is waiting for unwanted visitors. Surely you can guess what he intends.”
     The bird became uncertain.
The fly immediately took advantage of this.
„If you spare my life, I’ll fly over the field and see if the hunter is still hiding there. If he’s gone, I’ll let you know and thus save your life.”
„That’s not a bad idea,” said the bird.
Before he knew it, the fly was gone.
The sparrow waited at the spot until sunset. Then he realized he had been tricked. He took off and flew toward his nest.
